“Whatever you ask in my name, this I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If you ask me anything in my name, I will do it.” (John 14:13–14, ESV)
Have you ever wondered why these words don’t seem to come true every time you pray? “Whatever you ask in my name I will do.” How many things have you asked in His name that He did not do? Has that every given you doubts, or have you just tossed His silence into the “faith” pile and walked away? I know I have, but lately it has occurred to me that the most powerful prayer is for the very will of God to come to pass, and so I have begun to pray His Word as my prayer, along with my personal pleas. So I thought I’d share some of them here with you. This one is a prayer for wisdom. Every day I want the wisdom to walk in His ways, to discern good from evil and to choose His will over my own.
In this prayer you will see that all of the thoughts are taken directly from scripture, and changed only in person. They are God’s commands and promises and you know that if you ask them in Jesus name He will do it so that the Father may be glorified in the Son:
As this morning breaks, send out your light and your truth; let them lead me; let them bring me to your holy hill and to your dwelling, (Psalm 43:3) to the rock that is higher than I, for you have been my refuge, a strong tower against the enemy. (Psalm 61:2–3) Allow me to walk in the light of your life. Keep me from darkness. (John 8:12) Teach me to do your will, for you are my God! Let your good Spirit lead me on level ground, (Psalm 143:10) in the path of your commandments, for I delight in it. (Psalm 119:35)
Holy Father, instruct me and and teach me in the way I should go; Counsel me with my your eye upon me. (Psalm 32:8) Make me know your ways, O LORD; teach me your paths. Lead me in your truth and teach me, for you are the God of my salvation; for you I wait all the day long. (Psalm 25:4–5)
There are a lot of areas in God’s Word where I come up short, and in those areas I especially want to ask for God’s help. What areas are you looking for more prayer in? If you like this idea of praying God’s Word I’ll keep posting more collections, but I’d love to read some of yours as well!
